Orem Swimming Just Keep Swimming

Swimming Lesson Sessions

The Orem Recreation Department is dedicated to providing an opportunity for children in the community to become safe when they are in, on, or around water. The City of Orem has joined with other cities in creating the Utah County Swim School and has developed a new swimming lesson program. The program covers skills and knowledge in a logical progression for aquatic skill development. Lessons are scheduled around Alpine School District’s school schedule to accommodate as many students as possible. We reserve the right to combine, cancel, or transfer classes and participants as necessary.

NEW – CHILD CENTERED APPROACH

Our goal is to provide our swimmers the necessary training so they can enjoy their time spent in, on, and around the water.

After studying various swim lesson programs from around the country and to address the needs of our facility and students we have made the following adjustments.

  • Focus on individual child’s skill progression vs. Checking off skill boxes
  • Certificates based on child’s progression during the session vs. Completed the level
  • Ease of transition into skills vs. Forced to move on to the next skill on the list
  • Class groupings by same goal vs Same “level”
  • More time spent on endurance and comfort with a skill vs. Demonstrating skill to move on

Each of our classes will be separated by age as they were before.

Ages 3-5 and Ages6+

A $5 NON-REFUNDABLE FEE WILL BE CHARGED FOR ALL CLASS TRANSFERS AND REFUNDS. NO REFUNDS WILL BE GIVEN AFTER THE REGISTRATION DEADLINE.

We have combined level lessons for a few years – grouping by age and class goal removes the distraction of “Am I in the same “level” as the other kids in the class”

Increased focus on safety and comfort in the water

Increased communication between Instructor and Parents

What’s your Focus?  Recreational Swimming? Competitive Swimming? Boating? Water Safety? Not Sure Yet? Children and their parents set goals for their individual circumstances

Decreased focus on competitive techniques (*Only for some classes. Competitive strokes and skills are still taught for those who desire this training. However the focus in early stages is water safety and we do not want to take time away from safety training for competitive technique.)

In an effort to keep swimmers in class groupings of similar skills we do have requirements for entering some classes.

Students may be transferred the first 2 days to find the class best suited to their progression. Transfers after the 2nd day will be on a special requirement basis and must be approved by the Lesson Coordinator.

Requirements to enter each class

  • Parent Tot – Children must be at least 6 months old
  • Water Exploration – Students must be at least 3 years old
  • Water Safety- Students must be comfortable in the water and be able to
    • Jump into deep water and roll to back float unassisted

Whatever your water hobbies look like we want you to be safe while having fun!

Our Child Centered swim lesson programs are focused on the individual swimmers and their goals. Starting out with a focus on safety and developing a love of the water swimmers can progress to a recreational or competitive focus and become lifelong swimmers.
