Recitals

All dance recital rehearsals and recitals will be held at the Orem Senior Friendship Center (93 North 400 East). Dance rehearsals will be held on December 3rd & 4th at regularly scheduled class times, recitals will be held December 5th and 6th at 5:00pm.

Creative Dance: (ages 3-5)

Creative Dance focuses on the basics of movement to help children gain confidence in improvisation and imagination early on. Children will also be introduced to the fundamental techniques of dance: time, space, and energy. The aim is to help children discover fun ways to improve self-esteem, and performance skills. Curriculum will be tailored to the individual classes and varying levels, while still challenging the children to achieve through persistence. Basic ballet and other dance terms will be introduced, in addition to practicing their memorization skills through basic dance routines and activities. Children must be independent from the parent for the duration of the class. Participants dance barefoot and should dress in attire that allows ease of movement.

Dance I: (ages 5-7)

Dance I focuses on technique, spatial awareness, and performance quality. This class also stresses the individual exploration of movement, basic choreographic skills, and proper alignment to aid in injury prevention. Confidence, coordination and self-esteem will be increased while encouraging use of breath with movement, artistry and expression. Dancers will begin learning basic turns and across-the-floor movements. Ballet and other dance terms will be introduced, allowing a growing vocabulary to help express themselves through movement. Dancers will begin to identify their core and how using and strengthening those muscles can help control movement and balance. Helpful stretches and other exercises will be introduced as needed. Dancers should wear attire that allows technique to be visible and a full range of movement. Ballet shoes are not necessary, however dancers are encouraged to bring a pair of socks for specific exercises.

Dance II / Contemporary: (ages 6-8)

Dance II emphasizes performance quality, placement, technique, and spatial awareness. This class will incorporate strengthening exercises, stretches to help gain flexibility, and increased attention to detail. Dancers will learn proper alignment, and will be challenged to create their own dance sequences. Increased exposure to ballet and dance terms will strengthen the movement vocabulary making it easier for them to choreograph, and to interpret and express themselves through movement. This class stresses the combination of expression and precision, and the learning of choreographed routines for the recital. The dancers will improve coordination, technique, responsibility and self-esteem through persistence and accomplishing personal goals. Dancers will identify their core and better understand how to employ their muscles to create balance, use breath and unify movements. Helpful stretches and other exercises will be introduced as needed. Dancers should wear attire that allows technique to be visible and a full range of movement. Hair should be pulled back, or otherwise styled so as to be out of the face. Ballet shoes are not necessary, but dancers are encouraged to bring a pair of socks for specific exercises.

Hip Hop: (ages 7-12)

Hip Hop is an explosive, funky dance style that combines memory, coordination, rhythm games, and loads of energetic FUN!   Come learn the latest dance moves!  By combining fast paced rhythms and movement exercises, your child will get an AWESOME workout without realizing they are breaking a sweat!  We will choreograph routines and learn the fundamentals of this funky dance style without sacrificing the joy of dance or the thrill of being a “hip” kid!

Pre-Ballet: (ages 4-6)

Pre-Ballet is a fun introduction to the ballet discipline. To provide a good foundation, the basic ballet terms and technique will be learned in a creative way. Basic stretching and strengthening will be practiced regularly to aid in the preparation and execution of movements. An emphasis on alignment, and placement will be combined with basic musicality. Basic class and performance etiquette will be reviewed throughout each class. Basic memorization skills will be used during exercises and activities. Self-esteem, and confidence will be improved through persistence and practice. Girls wear pink tights, a black or dark colored leotard, and ballet shoes (recommended leather because of slick floor). Boys wear comfortable clothing and ballet shoes. If possible, hair should be pulled back and off the neck. This class will participate in the recital December 8th 2011 at 5 PM.

Dancers will learn to exercise memorization of dance combinations and the reversal of a step to prevent ‘lopsided’ dancing. This class will have an emphasis on Ballet alignment, placement and technique. Dancers will be exposed to ballet terms, etiquette, and will work on strength and flexibility. Performance skills will be increased at the same time, developing self-confidence, and a joy gained through persistence. Girls wear pink tights, a black or dark colored leotard, and ballet shoes (recommended leather because of slick floor). Boys wear comfortable clothing, for more details talk to instructor. If possible, hair should be pulled back and off the neck. This class will participate in the recital December 8th 2011 at 5 PM with the other dance classes.

Ballet Technique I: (ages 9+)

This class is the next level up after Intro to Ballet or Dance 2. More complex Ballet exercises will be learned at the barre and in the center and there will be an introduction to contemporary ballet. Dancers will learn to exercise memorization of dance combinations and the reversal of a step to prevent ‘lopsided’ dancing. This class will have an emphasis on Ballet alignment, placement and technique being using more creatively as well as an increase in difficulty. Dancers will be exposed to ballet terms, etiquette, and will work on strength and flexibility. Performance skills will be increased at the same time, developing self-confidence, and a joy gained through persistence and achievement. If the opportunity arises partnering may be added to the curriculum. Girls wear pink tights, a black or dark colored leotard, and ballet shoes (recommended leather because of slick floor). Boys wear comfortable clothing, for more details talk to instructor. If possible, hair should be pulled back and off the neck. This class will learn 2 full length dances to perform in the recital December 8th 2011 at 5 PM with the other dance classes.

Island Style Creative Dance I

This class focuses on natural movement and gross motor skills while gaining an understanding of some of the basics of Polynesian dance including long poi balls and Maori “ti ti toria” sticks. Dancers are introduced to simple hand movements and their meanings. Some fundamental techniques are taught, but children are encouraged to express their own creativity through movement. Class attire and implements required at each class. Boys will be introduced to basic Haka technique and spinning used in the “Samoan knife dance”.

Island Style Adult Combo I

This class is offered for adults who are interested in learning and/or improving upon Polynesian dance skills, while also getting an excellent aerobic workout. All implements will be taught in this class. Implements are required at each class.
