Senior Citizens are invited to meet with friends at the Orem Senior Friendship Center to enjoy socially enriching experiences, intellectual stimulation, physical fitness programs, educational opportunities, artistic fulfillment, a daily nutrition program (transportation is available), big screen TV, assistance programs, and varied information and referral services.

Membership in the Orem Senior Friendship Center organization is open to all men and women 55 years of age and older without restriction as to race, religion, creed, sex, national origin, political belief, or income.

Annual memberships are $3 per calendar year.

Lunches served at the Orem Senior Friendship Center are funded by Mountainland Association of Governments and the State of Utah for seniors who are 60 years of age and older.  The suggested donation is $2 for 60+ seniors and the mandatory cost is $4.90 for 59 and younger Food is cooked at the Utah County Security Center.  Luncheon reservations are required at least one business day before 12 noon.  Call 801-229-7111 to order your lunches. 

The Senior Center is closed Saturdays and Sundays.

Meals on Wheels - Mountainland Association of Governments can provide a hot, nutritious meal to those seniors who are homebound. Call 801-229-3802 to be placed on the delivery list.

Birthdays - On the first Friday of each month, a Birthday Party is held to honor all current Orem Senior Friendship Center members who have a birthday during the month. Come and celebrate your birthday with us. Check our newsletter for this month's birthdays

Curb-side Transportation for the Disabled - Individuals who are not able to use the UTA service due to age, physical, mental, or visual disabilities may qualify for curb-side transportation service. Transportation is scheduled on a first-come first-served basis. The service runs from approximately 7 AM to 11 PM. If you desire further information, please call 801-374-9306 for an application.

Information and Referral - The Orem Senior Friendship Center offers information and referral services for seniors. When you don't know who to call, call 801-229-7111, and the friendly, courteous staff will do their best to help you.

Gift Shop - The Orem Senior Friendship Center Gift Shop is open Tuesdays and Fridays from 10:00AM to 12:00 noon. Come see the variety of cute and useful items for sale each day.

Outreach Program - A representative from Community Action is available to answer questions on the H.E.A.T. program, property tax abatements, renter refunds, etc. For further information on Community Action, please call 801-373-8200 and ask for Jen.

H.E.A.T. - Community Action will schedule for and take H.E.A.T. applications at the Orem Senior Friendship Center on a regular basis beginning in mid-October 2013 to the end of the H.E.A.T program in March 2014

Tax Abatement 2013 - Tax credit is available for those who qualify!

Those who qualify for Property Tax Abatement:

  • Homeowners who are at least 66 years of age.
  • Surviving spouses of any age.

(eligibility is based on household income)

Those who qualify for Renter's Rebate:

At least 66 years of age before December 31, 2012.
Surviving Spouse.
Cannot be claimed as a dependent.
Have lived in Utah for the entire year of 2012.

Drop-In Activities - Seniors are welcome at the Orem Senior Friendship Center Monday through Friday 8 AM to 5 PM to enjoy drop-in activities at their leisure, i.e., reading, television, billiards, quilting, shuffleboard, exercise equipment, exercise classes, walking track, Nintendo Wii, ceramics, line dancing, or come volunteer - there is always something to do.

 

Line Dancing - Whether you are a beginner or have been Scootin' Your Boots for many years, this class will have your heart beating and your feet moving! Every Monday and Friday 2-4:00 PM.

Bingo - Bingo is played every Tuesday and Thursday after lunch at 1:00 PM. Come and try your luck in this fun activity and maybe win a great prize.

Income Tax Preparation - AARP provides help for seniors in preparing annual income tax forms. This services is offered February through the first part of April.

Legal Aid - Law students from the Brigham Young University Law School are available at the Center for legal advice to senior citizens September through November each year. Times and days of the week varies. Call the Orem Senior Friendship Center for further information, 801-229-7111.

Wellness clinics are offered every Friday from 10:30-Noon.  Patrons can have their blood sugar and blood pressure checked by a medical personnel from one of our local Home Health and Hospice agencies or Skilled Nursing Facilities on the First, Second and Fourth Fridays.  The third Friday our members are able to visit with a Diabetes Specialist about their illness, prevention and management of Diabetes.

  • Third Friday: One Care Home Health and Hospice with Teresa Cain
  • Fourth Friday Hearts for Hospice

Trips and Tours - For information on trips and tours, stop by the Orem Senior Friendship Center or call 801-229-7111 to check the upcoming schedule. Trips are announced, advertised and promoted in the Senior Citizen's monthly newsletter. Pick up the current newsletter today. Payment is required to reserve seating on all Orem Senior Friendship trips. Seating is on an as-available basis. Last year, the Orem seniors enjoyed 61 trips and tours -- that's more than one trip weekly!

SENIOR CLASSES OFFERED:

Computer Classes - Computer classes are available to Orem Senior Friendship Center members for only $1 per class. Class information sheets are available at the receptionists office, or contact Gena at 801-229-7110, for questions on the classes. The following classes are can be scheduled:

  • Introduction to Computers
  • Microsoft Word
  • Word Perfect
  • Beginning Windows XP
  • Beginning and Advanced Personal ancestral File (PAF-5.2)
  • Internet Browsers
  • E-Mail

Porcelain & Ceramics - Check in at the reception desk, pay your $1.00 fee and then head down to the ceramics class to make some fun ceramics and porcelain figurines and dolls for yourself or for your family as gifts. Excellent instructors will teach correct procedures for pouring, finishing, and firing in the ceramics room according to the following schedule:

  • Monday 9:00 AM-12:30 PM Instructors: Leah and Carol
  • Tuesday 9:00 AM-12:30 PM Instructor: Leah and Carol
  • Thursday 9:00 AM-12:30 PM Instructors: Leah and Carol

AARP Driver Safety Course - An AARP Driver Safety Course is conducted at the Orem Senior Friendship Center in January March, May, July, September and November. The course is under the direction of local AARP Defensive Driving instructors. Graduates of this valuable course earn a 5% to 10% discount on their auto insurance. Statistics show that those seniors who complete the AARP Driver Safety Course have 16% fewer traffic injuries, fatalities, and convictions. The cost is $12 for four hours of class instruction. The classes are held on Wednesday mornings from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. Please call for specific dates and times.

Tai Chi Classes - Paul Sames teaches relaxation Tai Chi on Monday's from 8-9:00 AM.  Toni Hill is the instructor Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:05 AM to 9 AM. Free Tai Chi classes are taught by senior volunteers.



Quilting
- (Free, no instruction). All volunteers are welcome to come and help. Quilts are set up in the quilting room which is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM. If you would like to have a quilt top marked, tied, quilted, or bound, please call 801-229-7111 or come visit the quilters.



Billiards
- (Free, no instruction). Daily 8 AM to 5 PM.

Wood Shop - The wood shop is open under the direction of Allan Hair. He has many years of experience in woodworking and is very excited to work with you. At the wood shop, you will be able to make anything from birdhouses to bookshelves. Allan will be there to assist you and answer any questions you may have. The wood shop is open Tuesdays from 1 PM to 3 P.M.
